Course description:
Vorticity, Ertel PV, quasi-geostrophic theory, PV-thinking and w-thinking.  Barotropic instability, baroclinic instability.  Frontogenesis.   Wave-mean flow interaction.  

Prerequisites:
ATM S 509/OCEAN 512 or equivalent.

Grading:
Homework: 50%, collaboration with fellow students is encouraged, but each student must submit their own write-ups. 
Midterm exam: 20%, in class exam, open book, open notes.
Final exam: 30%, take-home, open book, open notes.
