Atmospheric Motions II
ATM S 442/504, Winter 2014

Lecture: MWF 1:30-2:20, ATG 310C
Lab: T 1:30-4:20, ATG 610

Prerequisites
ATM S 441 or 503

Textbook
Holton, J.R. and Hakim, G. J., 2012: Introduction to Dynamic Meteorology, 5th Edition. Elsevier.

Grading
Homework: 400 pts, Lab: 500 pts, 2 tests: 300 pts each, Final Exam (comprehensive): 500 pts
4.0 = 2000 pts
Various small extra credit opportunities will be available throughout the quarter

Big extra credit project (up to 80 pts): write a Wikipedia article (with at least 3 citations!) on one of the topics we covered in class. There are currently no entries for geostrophic adjustment, Eady model, Charney model, etc., and lots of the topics relevant to our course are treated poorly.

Or, make a high-quality animation of a simulation that illustrates a topic we covered in class and upload it to youtube with a full description. Either option needs to be pre-approved by the professor, and should be iterated with the prof a few times (so send me a first draft a few weeks before the quarter ends) to assure a high-quality final product.

You can work in groups for homework, but each student must do their own writeup.
