2019 Annual AMS Conference

PHOENIX, AZ - Over a dozen UWAMS members represented the UW and our department at the 99th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Undergraduate students participated in the Student Conference, attending workshops, professional sessions, and talks by atmospheric scientists and professionals from around the world.

The annual meeting is the largest meeting of atmospheric science professionals in the world. UWAMS members in attendance enjoyed unique opportunities to connect with fellow atmospheric scientists, learn about state-of-the-art research, and explore career options in academia, government agencies, and the private sector.

"AMS gave me an opportunity to meet and build relationships with other students and professionals in atmospheric science," said senior and UWAMS Social Chair Jonathan Chriest. "It was an amazing experience that allowed me to see all the different opportunities that are out there."

Club secretary and senior Elisa Zamora agrees, adding, "attending AMS ... gave me the option to attend other discussions that I had no clue existed [and] that piqued my interest."

Attending the annual conference is a tradition for UWAMS. In accordance with its mission of fostering education in atmospheric sciences for its members, the club organized fundraising events for members to participate in and channeled the funds earned during these events into funding for student travel. UWAMS completely or partially funded airfare and lodging for seven members to attend the conference.

"We're proud to be able to grant undergraduate students this opportunity", said UWAMS officer Jonathan Weyn. "It's a tradition we hope to continue for many years!"
