Dear Jim and Soren, FMI is currently, as you are aware of, together with various European and US institutes and organisations, pursuing a NetLander concept for the Mars Express mission. A key instrument in the NetLander payload is ATMIS, the Atmospheric Structure and Meteorology Instrument. The ATMIS is primarily provided by FMI with some individual sensors coming from JPL, Univ of Padova and Service d'Aeronomie. Prof Pellinen has nominated me as the PI of the ATMIS instrument with the responsibility to put together a science team, define the scientific objectives, develop, manufacture and deliver the instrument in the schedule to be defined by the Mars Express mission. Jim, I would like to invite you and Soren Larsen to participate as Co-Investigators in our ATMIS experiment team. Please let me know if this invitation is suitable for both of you. ..... NETLANDER study aims at submitting an integrated payload to ESA's Mars Express mission AO. The response is due on 24 February, 1998. I am the study manager and Gilbert Leppelmeier (FMI) is acting as the executive director of the study. Philippe Lognonne (IPGP, Paris) is the Scientific Coordinator of the study. Currently the main participating organisations are: FMI, CNES, IPGP, ASI, DLR, JPL and various industrial companies. Tomorrow I will fax to you an information package on NETLANDER and ATMIS. Next week, on 3-5 November, we will have a NETLANDER study progress/working meeting organised by CNES at the CNES HQ (meeting information below). You are welcome to participate in the meeting, the most interesting day may be Tuesday 4 Nov. I will be in Paris from Sunday night (2 Nov) till Wednesday night (5 Nov). Could you participate in the next week's NetLander meeting in Paris for us to discuss the ATMIS and NetLander topics ? At least on Wednesday I should have lots of time with you to discuss and plan the NetLander and ATMIS issues. Please let me know your opinions of this. Best Regards, Ari-Matti Harri, FMI. e-mail received 11:30 local time, Roskilde Denmark, 30 Oct. Larsen provided funds and Tillman represented Larsen and Tillman interests at Paris meeting 3 Nov.
