One of Professor Houze's special interests is in clouds and precipitation over mountains. He has been involved in and led field projects to study clouds and precipitation over the European Alps, the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest, and the Himalayas in the Asian monsoon. In 1999 he spent several months in Italy using aircraft and radars to study storms that produce floods in the Alps.
