NOTE! Assignments are due on Wednesdays!

Here are the rules for Homework!

#1 . 4/01/08: due Wednesday 4/9/08

1) Study Chapters 1 & 2 of Global Physical Climatology (GPC)
2) Read the following web document and look at all the pictures. Our Changing Climate
3) Do problems 2 & 3 on page 17 of GPC, and problems 2, 3, 6, 7, & 8 on page 39 of GPC.

#2. 4/9/08: due 4/16/08

1) Study Chapter 3 of GPC
2) Do the following problems at the end of Chapter 3 of GPC (pages 79-80): 1, 2 & 4.
3) Go to the following web site http:/eos.atmos.washington.edu/erbe/

a) Take a look at the first row of egg plots. Compare the absorbed solar radiation during DJF and JJA. During which season and in what latitude zone is the absorbed shortwave radiation greatest? Explain why it is greatest during this season and in this latitude belt using what you know about the relation of insolation to the Earth's orbit.

b) Take a look at the second row of egg plots. Why do you think the Net Radiation looks so much like the absorbed solar radiation during the solstitial months? Compare to the shape of the OLR plot.

These plots are equal area plots. The area on the computer screen is proportional to the area on the surface of Earth.

#3. 4/9/08 due 4/23/08 .

1) Do the following problems at the end of Chapter 3: 5, 6 and 7.

At the end of problem 6 you are asked: "How does the required convective energy flux change as you move the top level?" As you move the top level upward, its temperature stays the same, because it is the emission temperature, but the surface fluxes change because the temperature and radiation balance at the surface change. How?

2) Study Chapter 4 of GPC

#4. 4/22/08 due 4/30/08

1) Do the following problems at the end of Chapter 4 of GPC: 3, 4 & 5
2) Study Chapter 5 of GPC
3) Chapter 5 of GPC problems on pages 134-135: 1, 2.

Hey! Mid Term is on Wednesday 7 May, 2008!! It will cover Chapters 1-5.
Here is an examination study sheet in pdf format

2) Do problems 5, 6, and 7 on page 228. In problem 6 make the melting time 500 years instead of 5,000. In problem 7 make the flow of water from the south 2 x 10^^10 instead of 2 x 10^^11 kg/s. NOTE: These change only apply if you happen to have the first printing of the book. If you have the second printing, these changes are already in the text.

2) Do problems 1, 2, 3, & 4 at the end of Chapter 11 of GPC. In problem 4 the reference should be to Fig. 11.10 not 11.9. AACK!! Answers to 4 should be 113W/m^^2, or 23%, with contribution from precession 16% about twice as big as obliquity 7%.

#10. 6/2/08 due 6/06/08

1) Study Chapter 12 of GPC
2) Do problems 1, 3, & 5 on pages 344-345 of GPC.
