#2. 4/8/13: due Wednesday 4/17/13

1) Study Chapter 3 of GPC
2) Do the following problems at the end of Chapter 3 of GPC (pages 79-80): 1, 2 & 4.
3) Go to the following web site http:/eos.atmos.washington.edu/ceres/

These are just review exercises, I don't want answers back.
a) Take a look at the first row of egg plots. Click on the small images to enlarge them. Compare the absorbed solar radiation during DJF and JJA. During which season and in what latitude zone is the absorbed shortwave radiation greatest? Explain why it is greatest during this season and in this latitude belt using what you know about the relation of insolation to the Earth's orbit.

b) Take a look at the second row of egg plots. Why do you think the Net Radiation looks so much like the absorbed solar radiation during the solstitial months? Compare to the shape of the OLR plot.

These plots are equal area plots. The area on the computer screen is proportional to the area on the surface of Earth.

Chapter 2 Homework Answers

#3. 4/15/13 due 4/24/13 .

1) Do the following problems at the end of Chapter 3: 5, 6 and 7.

At the end of problem 6 you are asked: "How does the required convective energy flux change as you move the top level?" As you move the top level upward, its temperature stays the same, because it is the emission temperature, but the surface fluxes change because the temperature and radiation balance at the surface change. How?

2) Study Chapter 4 of GPC
