Goals of the course: To gain a practical understanding of Earths climate and the role of humans in the climate system of Earth. To gain writing skills by writing pieces about climate. This is a general course for students of all backgrounds. A working knowledge of high school algebra and physical sciences will be assumed, but I will try to review these things as we use them. This is a both an NW course and a W course and will provide you with 5 credits toward both the Natural World and Writing requirements for graduation. If you dont want the W credit, you can write a shorter paper.
Textbook and required reading: The textbook for the course is, The Earth System, by Kump, Kasting and Crane, Prentice-Hall. A bound volume of class notes can be purchased from the copy room in the basement of Gerberding Hall. In addition, some class notes will be distributed electronically. In order to complete your class writing projects, you will need to use magazine articles and/or books from the library.
Course Requirements and Grading: Homeworks will be assigned on a weekly basis. You need to watch the class web page, where all homeworks and other info will be listed. Late homeworks will not be accepted. Weekly Pop-Essays will be given at random times without prior notice. In these you will be given a question related to the subject matter to write about, and about 5 minutes to do it. Please bring loose-leaf paper and a pencil to every class. There will be a mid-term test and a final examination. Tests will be short answer/essay style. Please bring blue books to the mid-term and final exams. If you have a good reason why you cannot take an examination on the date specified, please inform the instructor well in advance of the date. [There will be no makeup exams except in case of serious illness or death in the family. You must be excused in advance, by telephone or email, if necessary.] Participation in class discussions, and raising good questions during lecture is strongly encouraged.
