Abstract
Mike and Stephanie Battisti own an 230-acre dairy farm in
Madison County, NY, housing 60 Holsteins and 60 heifers. The
Battistis aim to enhance the economic and environmental
sustainability of their farm by generating their income from a
variety of on-farm enterprises such as dairy farming, maple
syrup production and flower-selling, and by substituting
industrially produced inputs with farm produced ones such as
stored manure, rotationally grazed pasture, cultural methods
for pest control and the hiring of the services of a local crop
management association.
