The data provided consists of monthly free-troposphere temperature anomalies as well as monthly temperature anomalies for the lower stratosphere for the period from December 1978 to present. These data are derived following Fu et al. (2004) by using Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) brightness temperatures as compiled by the University of Alabama Huntsville and Remote Sensing Systems for MSU channels 2 and 4 and their successors on NOAA-15 and beyond. The anomaly time series are provided on the following spatial scales: global, 20N-20S, 20N-85N, 20S-85S, 60N-85N, and 60S-85NS, as well as for the continental US. These time series are provided for land and ocean, as well as for land, and ocean separately. All troposphere anomalies are expressed as departures from the 1979-1998 base period, and stratosphere anomalies as departures from the 1984-1990 base period for the time series as well as the gridded datasets.
