lpr -Pname file where
name is the printer name and
file is a postscript file. All other formats must be printed via some program:
- .pdf - acroread or gv

Setting your default printer depends upon how you are printing.
- CUPS - lpoptions -d printername
- KDE - From the K menu select the "Control Center". Expand the "Peripherals" section and select "Printers" Make sure you are using the "CUPS" Printing system. Then right click on the printer you want to use and select make default from the menu.
Printing on Windows
To set up Windows to print to these go to
add printer. Select
network printer. Select the
URL option and use:
where
pname is the printer name. Then continue with the normal windows printer setup.
Printing on Mac OS X
To uses these printers on a Mac OS X you should be able to check off the ones you want to use from
shared printers in the
print and fax section of
system preferences (the light switch on your launch bar).
- Select "System Preferences..." from Apple Menu
- Select the "Print & Fax" pane under "Hardware"
- Select the "Printing" tab and click the "Setup Printers..." button
- From the resulting window, check off the printers you want from the Shared Printers list
If the printer you want does not appear, more options may be found by clicking the "Add" button in the printer list toolbar. You may add any printer with an IP address by selecting "IP Printing". The following procedure was successfully used to add an IP printer for a Mac running OS X 10.5.6:
1) In the "Print and Fax" menu (see above), click the unlock, enter admin password, and click the "+" button.
2) Enter the following:
- Protocol: Internet Printing Protocol - IPP
- Address: advect.atmos.washington.edu
- Queue: printers/printername (where "printername" is the name of the specific printer you want to add)
- Name: (call it what you want)
- Location: (it's helpful to enter physical location of printer, like bldg and room, for your own reference)
- Print Using: Click and choose "Select a driver to use", then choose your printer model from the list (hopefully it will be there)
3) Click add...it may ask some questions about specific printer features installed (duplex, extra trays, etc.). Check what applies, click continue.
4) It may ask for your admin password. Enter it, click ok, and the new printer should be added to your list. It will probably set it as the default printer, which you may want to keep or change.
Other Printers
In addition to these, you will find a few other printers scattered around the department. These belong to specific groups, and you must have permission prior to using them.
