Absolute instability

DEFINITION:

The state of a column of air in the atmosphere when it has a lapse rate of temperature greater than the dry-adiabatic lapse rate.

An air parcel displaced vertically would be accelerated in the direction of the displacement as the temperature of the air parcel would always be warmer than the surrounding air causing it to rise.
