Fellowships and Opportunities
Global and Environmental Geochemistry (GEGC) is a new interdisciplinary initiative in the Graduate School of UW. Its goal is to encourage interdisciplinary graduate education and research across traditional departmental boundaries. GEGC will sponsor seminars and offer a 4-course curriculum that will cover environmental chemistry problems from local and regional to global scales. For the 98/99 academic year GEGC will award up to 4 first year (9-month) graduate fellowships on a competetive basis. Award recipiants will be accepted through participating departments. If you wish to be considered for one of these fellowships please indicate so in your application. For more information contact James W. Murray at (206) 543-4730 or jmurray@u.washington.edu.
The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO), jointly sponsored by the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, and the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Princeton, NJ, has now available a research associate (post-doctoral) position to study large-scale variability in atmospheric GCMs and observations. The appointment will be made through the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington.
The successful candidate will analyze experiments with the GFDL GCM to study intraseasonal and interannual variability and its dependence on internal atmospheric dynamics, forcing from sea surface temperature variations such as those originating in the ENSO phenomenon, and interaction with an oceanic mixed layer model. Natural modes of variability simulated by the GCM will be compared with observations and the GCM will then be used to better understand how these modes of variability are sustained in the model. Very long integration's of the model will enable studies of the structure and statistics of natural variability that are not possible with the much shorter observed record. Candidate will interact with team members at the UW and at other institutions to plan experiments and carry out analysis and interpretation.
Scientists with a recent Ph.D. in the atmospheric sciences, and with strong interests and/or background in the design and diagnosis of GCM simulations are encouraged to apply.
Term of appointment: One (1) year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. Send curriculum vitae and a list of at least three (3) references to: Prof. Dennis L. Hartmann, c/o Ingrid M. Quertermous, Administrator, JISAO, Box 354235, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195.
The deadline for applications is April 17, 1998.
The University of Washington is building a culturally diverse faculty and strongly encourages applications from female and minority candidates. The University of Washington is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
