Endowed Chairs in Global Atmospheric Change and Other Important Topics: For the department to remain a leader in teaching and research, we must attract and retain the best faculty. Competition over leading faculty candidates is acute, and it is difficult to secure the necessary resources from within the University. The department is putting particular effort in creating a strong program in global climate change, both because of its scientific challenges and clear societal implications. We also hope to establish chairs in other topcs, such as Northwest Weather and Forecasting, and Global Atmospheric Chemistry.
Endowed Student Support: Although most of our graduate students are supported on research grants, we need funds to recruit the very best. In addition, the most creative interdisciplinary research is often difficult to support with grant and contract funds. Endowed support for such students will allow the department to recruit top students and maintain a wide-ranging research program.
The Chair's Fund for Excellence: One job of a department chairperson is to support initiatives by faculty and students in new and promising areas. Support is also needed to build and maintain critical department infrastructure. An endowed fund for this purpose would support the continued excellence of this department.
