Course work and grading  The course grade is based on performance on eight weekly quizzes (given on  most Fridays) and on the Final Exam. Some quizzes may be weighted more than others and the final exam grade will receive a weight roughly equivalent to two fully-weighted weekly quizzes. The quizzes and exams will emphasize problem solving skills. The problems posed on the quizzes will roughly parallel the exercises suggested in the course schedule, most of which are taken from the text.  Students are encouraged to work on the exercises in groups. Students missing a quiz for reasons of illness, irreconcilable scheduling conflicts, or compelling personal reasons will not be penalized; in some cases it may be possible for the student to take the exam at an alternative time. If you expect to be miss an exam, please contact the instructor in advance, if possible.
