Description
This course is an introduction to air pollution on local, regional, and global scales. We will focus on the sources, transformation, and dispersion of pollutants responsible for urban smog, acid rain, climate change and the stratospheric ozone hole. We will examine the health and environmental effects of air pollutants, as well as current (or potential) technological solutions and policy regulations. The class will be divided in three parts:
Textbook The textbook will be placed on
reserve in the Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Max loan period: 4

25% You are expected to attend lectures and participate in class. There will be no make-up exams except in extreme circumstances, in which case you must contact the instructors in advance of the exam. Research

Credit Service learning provides students a unique opportunity to connect coursework with life experience through public service. Offered as an integral part of many University of Washington courses, service learning provides students an opportunity to experience theories traditionally studied within classrooms come to life, through serving with community-based organizations. Choosing to engage in service learning is a way to demonstrate your commitment to your community and your ability to link your academic studies to practical, real-world experiences. The Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center, located in 120 Mary Gates Hall, facilitates contacts with community-based organizations and will help you to coordinate your service learning opportunity. How Do I Sign Up? A list of organizations and service learning positions matched with this course will be presented during the first week of classes, on Thursday September 28. These listings are also available on the website www.depts.washington.edu/leader under Autumn, 2006 by clicking on the course title. You will register for your service learning opportunity through this website during the second week of autumn quarter. Registration will open at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, October 3rd and close at 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 5th. Who can I talk to at the Carlson Center? Carlson Center staff will be available between the hours of 9:00 am-5:00 pm Monday-Friday during the first and second week of the quarter. The Center will have extra staff on hand on Monday, October 2nd to answer your service learning questions prior to the opening of service learning registration. Feel free to e-mail, serve@u.washington.edu with any questions you may have, or to call the office at (206) 616-2885 if you are unable to come to Mary Gates Hall 120. Assignments related to service learning Students will conduct their final project for the course on their service learning experience. They will write a paper on the knowledge they gained through service learning and how their experience connected with course readings and lectures. They will also present to the class a poster on their experience. |
