In Friday sections on November 19, you will be asked to select one of two reports to read and use for an activity we are calling a debate. It is a debate in the sense that we are asking you to learn from these two reports that present very different pictures of the impact on ecosystems resulting from global warming. For this activity you will read and understand one of the following reports. We organized you into groups so about half of you would read each one. However, you would benefit from reading the executive summary of both reports. If you missed section, please contact your TA and they will tell you which one to read based on a need to evenly distribute the "sides". Before class on Dec 3, prepare a 2 page essay about the report you read. In your essay include a short summary, indicate what you think are the most compelling arguments made by the authors, suggest further points that should have been raised in support of the authors' perspective, and finally and most importantly give your opinion on the success of the report. In class on Dec 3 you will be allowed some time to discuss you ideas first with classmates who read the same report and then together as a whole group. The reports: An optomistic view about the impacts of global warming Recommended reading: Executive summary, p 1-10 (bold number in lower left corner), and p 21-24 A concerned view about the impacts of global warming Recommended reading: p 1-17 |
