Grading
will be apportioned as follows:
Readings. You are expected to do the assigned readings in the syllabus. Materials from the readings are fair game for homeworks and exams. Class overheads are downloadable from class web page as pdf files. Exams (all held in Kain 220) will be a mixture of multiple choice
and short answer and closed book/note. Students should bring a scantron sheet
and pencil for all exams. The
final exam will cover the entire course. Students who cannot attend an exam must make arrangements for a makeup with
their TA or Prof. Bretherton at least one week prior to the scheduled examination date. Exam dates are:
Homework Homework will be posted on the class web page on each Thursday starting 30 Sep. except those before midterm exams. You are responsible for printing out your own copy of the homework. It is due at the beginning of lecture on Thursday of the next week. Homeworks will typically consist of five questions. 2 homework problems will be selected at random by the TA's and each graded on a scale of 0-5. The previous week's graded homework will be handed out at quiz section. A student may hand in one late homework assignment during
the quarter without penalty. After that, 25% will be taken off the grade on
each late homework. No late homework will be accepted after the Tuesday lecture
following the due date. Your lowest homework score will be dropped in
computing your overall homework grade.
Quiz Sections.
led by TAs will complement the lectures. They may include a
laboratory demonstration or worksheet, and also provide you an
opportunity for informal discussion of the lecture material and of
graded homework assignments. To provide you and us quick feedback on your
understanding of basic course material, there will be short (no more than
10 minute) quizzes during most quiz sections, which will count for 10% of the
overall course grade. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped, and
you will receive 50% credit on a quiz just for showing up and writing your
name on it. No quiz section will be held on 30 Sep.-1 Oct, since classes
only start on 29 Sep. Forecast Contest. We will hold a web-based
forecasting contest to predict each evening whether it will be raining at the
beginning of the next day's lecture. starting a few weeks into the quarter. Details will be posted on
the class web page. This contest will count for 5% of your class grade. Participation will count for half of your contest
score, skill for the other half.
