Homework Homework will be posted on the class web page on each Thursday starting 30 Sep. except those before midterm exams. You are responsible for printing out your own copy of the homework.  It is due at the beginning of lecture on Thursday of the next week. Homeworks will typically consist of five questions. 2 homework problems will be selected at random by the TA's and each graded on a scale of 0-5. The previous week's graded homework will be handed out at quiz section.

A student may hand in one late homework assignment during the quarter without penalty. After that, 25% will be taken off the grade on each late homework. No late homework will be accepted after the Tuesday lecture following the due date.  Your lowest homework score will be dropped in computing your overall homework grade.

Quiz Sections. led by TAs will complement the lectures. They may include a laboratory demonstration or worksheet, and also provide you an opportunity for informal discussion of the lecture material and of graded homework assignments.  To provide you and us quick feedback on your understanding of basic course material, there will be short (no more than 10 minute) quizzes during most quiz sections, which will count for 10% of the overall course grade. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped, and you will receive 50% credit on a quiz just for  showing up and writing your name on it. No quiz section will be held on 30 Sep.-1 Oct, since classes only start on 29 Sep.

Forecast Contest. We will hold a web-based forecasting contest to predict each evening whether it will be raining at the beginning of the next day's lecture. starting a few weeks into the quarter. Details will be posted on the class web page. This contest will count for 5% of your class grade.  Participation will count for half of your contest score, skill for the other half.
